Dover Port: Berth 6

SYNOPSIS

Dover Port: Berth 6Thortech International undertook a resurfacing project at one of the world’s busiest roll-on roll-off ferry ports.

Bimagrip anti-slip surfacing was installed on the double-decker linkspans at Berth 6.

The team faced the challenges of severe weather, a tight deadline and budget.

BRIEF

Thortech International were to work in conjunction with Braithwaite’s engineering, a major international civil engineering company. The project would involve the installation of a Bimagrip LS anti-slip system, dressed with a 3- 5mm Dynagrip at Berth 6, Dover port. The work was to be carried out on each of the double-decker linkspans.

PROCESS

The 2 400 m2 Linkspans had been constructed at Rowecord, Newport and were then floated to the Hoverport Terminal, Dover.

When the linkspans were in place, the steel deck surfacing was enclosed shot blast prior to the application of Bimagrip LS anti-slip system. This was then dressed with a Dynagrip 3-5mm aggregate, with all the loose aggregate being swept off by a road sweeper, before completion.

OUTCOME

Despite an interlude of inclement weather, the project was completed on schedule and within the client’s budget, in June 2013. The Berth now runs efficiently and safely with its new anti-slip surface.

Last year, approximately 2 million haulage vehicles passed through Dover Port with 2.5 million cars and 12 million passengers catered for.
